It has been an amazing ride so far Dolores. Its great to hear from you. That picture always cracks me up to. I guess its so funny because it actually happened. We had OK food but sometimes........ I remember having some Blackberry Cobbler at school and it still had briars in it! WE had fish one day and I asked for tartar sauce. The lady began to dip it out of the gigantic bowl right in front of me and this huge cock roach flipped up out of it! GEEESE..... Strange how things come to mind but my buddy Glen Anderson always signed my annual right under the picture of all the cafeteria ladies saying "you always were the ladies man"! He was a great guy anyway!
Do y'all remember when our milk at Donelson Elementary came from "Swiss Farm Dairy?" It was run by the Neiderhouser family that later developed "Purity Dairies" and hired Johnny Robinson who married Terri Neiderhouser.
Anyway, when it was Swiss Farm Dairy, you could taste the onions in the milk about this time of year. When the wild onions would sprout (and I think about 80% of them lived in my yard) the cows would eat them.
Despite Pasteurising, etc., the onion flavor would get through and the spring milk would have a wonderful onion boo-kay!
Yes Billy I do remember that smell and how dirty the cartons were sometime. Do you remember the SPAM (the real meat kind) they would serve us for lunch. I remember when someone threw one of those "STEAKS" into one of those high speed fly fans over the doors in the cafeteria. Man you would have thought a whole ham hit the fan as it went everywhere! I never did hear who actually threw it up there but it sure was effective!
Jim, Love the old photos, especially the "Dug Out". How many can you ID? I see David Cannon (far Left), Gary Chetham next to David, and my Best Bro Steve Shroder standing with his back to the camera. I think I was skipping school the day this was taken, because normally I was right there with the rest of them.
I did not know about Swiss Farm Daries becoming Purity. That was a neat bit of Donelson History that I had never heard. I do remember Neiderhouser Lake and visiting the old milk factory ruins, but never made the connection.
I cant remember all the names in the dug out but I remember about the same as you. I remeber all the faces though. I guess the faculty just turned thier backs on that area and never really bothered anyone!
Love the old photos. Sorry I missed your birthday so Belated Birthday Wishes. I don't even see the birthdays anymore on the home page. Am I missing them? Always second guess myself!!!
